Ynys Hir Nature Reserve — one of Wales' most celebrated wildlife sites, set in a richly biodiverse landscape. The setting makes the project both inspiring and demanding, with ecological sensitivity at the heart of every decision.

The RSPB needed modernised, purpose-built facilities to better support the day-to day running of the reserve — from staff and volunteer welfare to practical workshop and storage needs. The upgraded accommodation and offices will help attract and retain the volunteers who are vital to the reserve's work, while the new workshop gives the team the operational base they need on site.

A renovation and conversion of an existing farmhouse to provide offices and volunteer accommodation, alongside a new-build workshop and the creation of new parking facilities. The project transforms the working infrastructure of the reserve, providing the RSPB with fit-for-purpose facilities to support their staff, volunteers, and conservation operations.

Given the site's ecological importance, the project is being delivered with exceptional care. The existing farmhouse contains multiple bat roosts, a significant consideration on any renovation, and particularly so on a nature reserve managed by the RSPB. The team is working in close collaboration with an ecologist throughout the entire process, carefully sequencing and managing works to protect the roosts and ensure full compliance with wildlife legislation. It is a project that demands as much sensitivity as it does skill, and one the team is proud to be part of.
